2012 Events

Free Hula Workshop for Women & Men ~ Sept. 22

This introductory workshop offered participants an opportunity to learn basic steps, posture & hand motions used to tell stories in the dances. Students from our school also offered a short demonstration of ancient & modern style hulas. We had a great turn-out and a lot of fun!

Green Show at OSF ~ 2012AUGUST

Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show ~ August 9

We performed at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Green Show this summer, under the open sky at twilight. The turn out was incredible for this free community event.

Evening of Aloha: A Hula & Hawaiian Music Concert ~ June 2Evening of Aloha flyer

This was our annual ho'ike fundraiser for our non-profit, Kapi'oanuenue. Our program featured hula kahiko and hula 'auana performed by our haumana (ages 10-73), and was dedicated to Kumu Raylene. We were honored to share many of her dances throughout the evening and were blessed by the beauty of her spirit presence. Hawaiian band Ha'ena provided the musical entertainment, and accompanied our hula 'auana. Mahalo to everyone who came out to support us - we felt your love and energy big time! Thank you for helping to make our evening so fun and rich, and for making our fundraiser a success!

Hula Retreat ~ June 15-17
Greensprings Inn & Cabins, in the mountains above AshlandRetreat 2012

This special retreat allowed us to deepen our practice and knowledge of hula without the distractions of everyday life. Throughout our activities, which included oli, hula kahiko, hula 'auana, lei-making, and ho'oponopono "talk story", we explored the lokahi triad (living in balance), with regard to our relationships with Ke Akua (God, the Creator), Ke Kanaka (people/each other) and Ka 'Aina (land/environment). Our time together was infused in every way with Kumu Raylene's guiding presence and we were blessed
with many precious memories.

1st Friday Art Walk Fundraiser for Gema AllenGema fundraiser
Family Massage Education Center

Our haumana offered a short hula program in honor of our sister Gema, who was recovering from double-hip surgery. This festive Spring evening also included 15-minute massages by donation, free samples of Zorba’s Chocolates and folk music by Karen Hardman & friends. We raised over $300 for Gema!

An Evening with HAPA ~ March 13HAPA

Only several days after our beloved Kumu Raylene departed from this earth, this emotional evening became atribute to Kumu. Our wahine danced Wahine 'Ilikea and Andrea offered Kahea 'Uilani ("the beauty of the heavens calling") as a dedication as well. Mahalo nui to John Williams for the invitation to share our hula at the concert, and to everyone who attended, for your kindness and compassion in embracing our vulnerability that evening. Mahalo nui loa to Laurel Bloombaum, Aunty Carolee and her Nu'uanu hui for stringing and sending our beautiful pua kalaunu lei to us. We felt your aloha in every flower and in every strand.
