2013 Events

Keale, Inglis, Griffin, Lau: Slack Key Story and Song ~ November 6

The long awaited concert with Keale Kupuna and featured guests Stephen Inglis, Bill Griffin and Chris Lau was more magical than we could have possibly imagined. These guys shared so much aloha, laughs and talk story with with us ... We feel so blessed and eager for their return! Mahalo to our hosts at Grizzly Peak Winery for providing the venue and Susan Silva for the vision to bring these talented musicians to Ashland.

Rogue World Ensemble Village Concert ~ September 29

Although the concert moved indoors due to unseasonably cool, wet weather, we still had a great time enjoying songs from around the world and dancing Makalapua accompanied by the rich vocals of the Rogue World Ensemble choir. The band included our area's own Mark Nelson on 'ukulele. Thanks again to RWE for inviting us to collaborate! We hope they include more Hawaiian songs in future events.

HAPA in Lithia Park ~ August 7

Hawaiian band HAPA returned for their first ever outdoor concert in Ashland while on their brief summer 2013 tour. The concert was a wonderful, family-friendly event, with proceeds benefitting the Ashland Schools Foundation. Our haumana enjoyed another opportunity to share our hula with the band and our beloved southern Oregon 'ohana.

Ashland's 4th of July Parade

We had a great time flowing like lava down the streets of Ashland, while dancing a contemporary version of Aia La O Pele, a hula 'auana based on the traditional chant. Over forty of our halau members joined in the fun and we won 1st place in our category! Congratulations to our haumana - a wonderful acknowledgement for all our efforts!

Metamorphosis ~ May 11

We danced Makalapua at this seasonal showcase concert given by the Rogue World Ensemble. Choreographed especially for this event, this beautiful mele written in the late 1800s to honor Queen Lili'uokalani was sung by the choir and accompanied by Mark Nelson on 'ukulele.

When Spirit Comes Dancing ~ May 4
An Evening of Traditional Balinese & Hawaiian Dance

Hawaiian and Balinese traditions use dance as an expression of the movements of nature and an offering to the spirits. Our dancers presented traditional and contemporary hula and Bonnie Simoa, with dancers from Lane Community College in Eugene performed a rare traditional Balinese Legong.

Tribute to Kumu Raylene ~ March 9 & 10Halau at Volcano

Ka Pi'o O Ke Ānuenue performed with our sister halau from Kohala in Volcanoes National Park as a memorial dedication to Kumu Raylene on the one year anniversary of her passing (3/9/2013). On March 10 in Makaeo Park, Kona, we presented a ho'ike of all 14 hula kahiko that had been given to Kumu Andrea to pass on to our halau. Our purpose in making this trip and in offering these performances was to give our deepest mahalo nui loa to our beloved Kumu Raylene for generously sharing her many gifts of wisdom, knowledge and aloha with us. We felt the blessing of her spirit all around and within us, as an abiding presence of Grace and Benediction. Our haumana exemplified great dedication to the hula path and to Kumu Raylene throughout the entire process of fundraising and performance preparations. We are most grateful for the many blessings of this amazing and humbling journey.

Evening of Aloha: A Hula & Hawaiian Music ConcertEvening of Aloha ~ February 2

Our students presented a diverse program of hula kahiko & hula 'auana. Dedicated to Kumu Raylene, many of the pieces were choreographed by her, or for her, in her honor. Mahalo to all those who attended our event and to our kokua with the Silent Auction, bake shop and Hawaiiana store. Proceeds from this Gala Benefit Performance supported the haumana who represented our halau at our March performances in Hawai'i, and 5% was donated to The Rose Circle, a local non-profit that supports & empowers youth through mentoring.

Jeff Peterson Concert Jeff Peterson Concert ~ January 11

Jeff's malie presence was soothing to experience and we very much enjoyed dancing in the intimate environment of the small venue, amidst his talk story style of performing. It was an honor to dance with this talented musician and three-time Na Hoku Hanohano Awards winner. Jen Matsuura's & Kekai Enomoto's vocals were a lovely accompaniment.
