Island Night: An Aloha State of Mind ~ July 25Pam, Nozomi, Kathy

This 2nd annual event, sponsored by the City of Ashland, was held at Daniel Meyer Pool on a lovely, mid-summer's night. Since we didn't offer a ho'ike this year, it was a blessing to have this opportunity to dance with Ha'ena and offer a public hula performance for our community. A special highlight was the community class with Kumu Andrea - what an inspiration to see so many people dancing hula for the first time, learning Ke Ao Nani in just 15 minutes!

Hapa Concert: A Benefit for Ashland Schools ~ March 1

Award-winning Hawaiian band Hapa was back in Ashland to offer a concert in support of our schools. This was our 4th time performing hula with them in Ashland - we danced Hi'ilawe, Lei Pikake and Wahine 'Ilikea. Singer/Songwriter and masterful guitarist Barry Flanagan was joined by Kapono Na'ili'ili, a native Hawaiian speaker, chanter, multi-instrumentalist and winner of the Richard Ho'opi'i Falsetto Contest (2007), Tarvin Makia on bass, and hula dancer Radasha Ho'ohuli. Many thanks to Leslie Flanagan, the band, and producer John Williams for the opportunity!
