Hawaii Kupuna Hula Festival and Competition ~ September 14 & 15Kupuna

Pomaika'i to our Kupuna! Eight of our students in the "55 and older" age range performed at the 34th annual Kupuna Hula Festival and Competition in Keauhou, Hawai'i earlier this month. The theme for the 34th annual festival was "He Lei Hiwa No Kalakaua" Celebrating King David Kalakaua. Halau were asked to choose songs for their hulas that were written for him, about him or by him.

We were honored with first place awards in 3 out of 5 categories, along with being the overall winner. Kenika Apilada's solo placed first, along with the Kane group and the mixed kane/wahine hulas. Though our ladies didn't place, Susan Silva's solo was exquisite and deeply felt and the ladies group hula was beautiful and honoring of the mele.

We are so proud of our kupuna, so humbled and honored by the acknowledgement of the community, and so very grateful for all the support we have received from the seen and unseen. Mahalo nui Ke Akua, na aumakua, na kupuna, to our musicians, and to all those who offered their support and aloha to us. 'Ike ka hula i ke ala pono...

Island Night: An Aloha State of Mind ~ July 23 Island Night

Back by popular demand... this 3nd annual event, sponsored by the City of Ashland, gave our community an opportunity to relax with family and friends in a Hawaiian-themed setting at Daniel Meyer Pool. Our halau offered a hula performance and one of our haumana, Susan Silva, offered a mini-class during which she taught attendees a beginner's hula dance.

What fun to have two of the hottest ukulele players from the Islands, along with Slack Key Guitar Master Stephen Inglis! Mahalo to Stephen, Garrett and Peter for giving us such an awesome concert! We thoroughly enjoyed the gift of dancing hula with these incredible musicians. We hope you guys come again!

Hula in the Hills Ho'ike at Grizzly Peak Winery ~ June 26

Mahalo to all the people who came out to share this special day with our halau! We are so grateful to Grizzly Peak Winery for hosting us... what a blessing to have our ho'ike at this beautiful place and to dance under the open sky, surrounded by the beautiful foothills of Ashland. We are so proud of our dedicated haumana and we offer our mahalos to our families and community for all your support, to Ha'ena for the gift of your music, and to all the business and individuals who donated goods and services to our Silent Auction. Thanks to all of you, our fundraiser was a huge success. The proceeds will go toward the general funds of our non-profit Kap'ioanuenue, and will help send eight of our kupuna (age 55 and older) to represent southern Oregon when they perform at the Kupuna Festival and Competition in Keauhou, Hawai'i in September. Aloha a hui hou!
